The National Children's Fun Book
(NCFB) is a publication which is distributed FREE OF CHARGE to many children¹s
wards in hospitals throughout the UK. The publication is packed full of
activities to inspire, entertain and advise children and their parents. Many
activities are SAFETY based with other
tasks incorporating EDUCATION as FUN. The
aims of the publication are as follows:
Help to alleviate some of the fears,
social anxieties, and problems which children undergo when in hospital.
Many practitioners have commented
that the NCFB is a useful tool for distracting the children when undergoing
often painful or uncomfortable procedures.
The play-leaders often use the
activities in the NCFB as a lead into new activities.
Gives the children something
different on their return to school thus assisting them to return to their
peer group more smoothly.
With Safety pages about bicycle
riding, healthy eating, traffic, etc. we hope that the children may
develop a proactive approach to their own safety!
The NCFB is given free of charge to
the hospitals as each activity page is sponsored by industries involved in the
children¹s sector.
The book contains tracing paper and
a pop-out toy positive activities which are easily displayed to visitors.
The aim of the book (apart from the
obvious entertainment element) is to produce a publication which works on the
many different levels of experience which a child undergoes during a hospital
stay.
It is important to note that the
NCFB is becoming more and more popular with the practitioners at the hospitals
and with the children. The Superbugs have not helped with Children's Leisure
time whilst in hospital due to shared resources being limited as sterilization
becomes more of an issue! As the NCFB is individually 'owned' by each child
cross-contamination is far less likely!
You may be interested to know that
we are rapidly heading towards the 10th Anniversary of the NCFB and, we can
surmise that over this period we have together helped tens of thousands of
children during their time of need!
